The bosses at Coronation Street have reportedly been forced to change one of their rules after the cast were said to be threatening a walk out. Stars of the ITV soap are said to have been banned from making money through paid partnerships on social media, but this has changed in the past year.
Corrie’s bosses reportedly banned actors from seeking extra money by promoting products online unless an agreement was put in place with the ITV team beforehand. Requests are said to have been mostly turned down, with few exceptions being deemed appropriate. But in the last year, bosses have reportedly had to loosen the reins due to the cast’s threats of quitting.

A source told The Sun that a “secret war” had been taking place in the MediaCityUK studios since the cast, who are paid per episode, started to face a pay cut due to schedule changes resulting in fewer episodes airing a year. Amid fears of falling salaries, the cast are said to have insisted on being allowed to make an additional income through social media.
The source said: Over the last 12 months, it got to the point where a lot of the show’s leading stars were close to threatening to quit unless they could be afforded the luxury of regularly topping up their salaries outside of the show.”
They added that cuts to episodes “caused a real panic”, especially as the cast are thought to earn a modest salary. The Sun estimated key players will make anywhere between £45,000 and £80,000 a year.

After reaching out for a comment, a Coronation Street spokesperson said: “For some time now, the Coronation Street cast have been able to do extra curricular work, all requests are considered on merit and must be approved by production.”
The stars that have started to get work through sponsored content includes Samia Longchambon, Sair Khan and Lucy Fallon. While Sair has promoted a kitchen makeover and Lucy has done content for Jet2, Samia has landed an ongoing deal with M&S Food.

Tina O’Brien and Kate Ford have also started doing brand deals. Tina has started working talent agency Alpha Talent Group, who work with stars such as Helena Ford and Tommy Fury to secure brand partnerships. Meanwhile, Kate posted her first sponsored content on Instagram this year – a post promoting Elevate Collagen.
The source added to The Sun that Kate’s sponsored posts were a “prime example” of how the potential of a cast member leaving had reportedly pressured bosses into the rule change. They said that her time away from the show last year resulted in her essentially being a “part-time cast member” and that she realised her contract “could be holding her back”. According to the source, Kate backed the relaxation of the rules and it is believed this was what “saved her from quitting altogether”.
Lucy Fallon is also thought to have only decided to return to the show on the basis that she could continued to get paid partnerships. Meanwhile Charlotte Jordan left the show and afterwards, set up a career as a social media influencer. The source said her and Sue Cleaver’s departure was “a real shock” and sparked by their desire for “freedom to now rake in cash elsewhere”.

The source claimed that when the suggestion of pay cuts due to the drop in episode count was raised, bosses realised that continuing to prevent the cast from making money online could “cause a cast revolt”.
The Sun added that the cast still have to get permission from the soap’s bosses but that their requests were now being accepted rather than rejected.
