Shonda Rhimes is sharing that her daughter didn’t exactly have the right idea about her job when she was growing up.

The Grey’s Anatomy creator, 55, appeared on a Wednesday, Oct. 8 episode of Call Her Daddy and shared that she became a mom right around when the iconic series premiered. Rhimes went on to say that being a working mom has been one of the most amazing and hardest chapters of her life.

“I became a mom at the same time that Grey’s Anatomy came out,” says Rhimes, who welcomed her oldest daughter, Harper, now 22, through adoption in 2002. “And that was like, as a working mother, that was the hardest, most devastating, most amazing situation to be in the middle of.”

“My daughter grew up thinking I worked in a hospital. She did, because that’s where she was all the time,” she continued. “And so then, like ten years on, I thought, okay, so I’ve had one daughter and 37 actors, but she doesn’t have any siblings.”

“And so then it was the middle of Scandal, and I was like, ‘I’m gonna have two more kids.’ And that was a plan.”

Rhimes went on to welcome daughters Emerson, 12, through adoption in 2012 and Beckett, 11, through surrogacy in 2013.

In March 2024, Rhimes shared that one of her younger daughters had started to watch Grey’s Anatomy for the first time, sharing a sweet photo on Instagram. As her daughter ate a bowl of pasta, she watched an episode of the 20-season-long television series on her iPad.

“My not so tiny human started watching @greysabc for the first time yesterday,” Rhimes wrote in her caption. “My brain is breaking. 🤯 I am dead. DEAD. But so glad she’s getting to see the women her mom created.”

In 2022, the producer shared in an interview with WSJ Magazine that her three daughters had “never seen” the ABC medical drama.

“My youngest daughters are 8 and 9, so they’re far too young to watch it or even care, which is good,” Rhimes said at the time of Emerson and Beckett.

Her older daughter Harper also isn’t a fan of the show, but her friends have given it a binge or two.

“I have a 19-year-old who finds it horrifying that I’ve written a show that all of her friends have seen multiple times. And so she has never seen it. And I have to say, I think that might be the best compliment ever,” Rhimes said.

“I think about it like, her mother wrote a show that tells all her friends what to think about love and sex. So she’s not interested in watching it, and I think that that’s a very good thing,” the mother of three added.
