Grey’s Anatomy’s Jo Wilson Actor Reveals Her Ideal Series Ending
Jo Wilson actor Camilla Luddington shares how she thinks Grey’s Anatomy should end. Luddington’s Jo joined the show in season 9, starting out as a recurring character before becoming a series regular in season 10. She’s featured prominently in Grey’s Anatomy‘s storylines since then, with the show delving heavily into her traumatic past. Jo’s relationship with original character Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) was a favorite with viewers for several seasons. The two eventually married, but Chambers’ abrupt exit from the show in season 16 forced a breakup between the characters.

Grey’s Anatomy season 18 focused on Jo’s career as an OB/GYN resident after she previously served as an attending general surgeon. Recent episodes explored her complicated relationship with her long-time friend Link, as she realized she loved him while he didn’t seem to feel the same way. The Grey’s Anatomy season 18 finale featured a turning point for their characters as they agreed to spend the night hanging out with their kids, suggesting romance or at least a renewal of their friendship is on the horizon.
Speaking with Good Morning America, Luddington reflected on her time playing Jo and the show’s milestone 400th episode. Though Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for season 19, Luddington offered her pitch for how the show should end when the time comes:
Can we be on a beach? I just feel like there have been so many huge disasters. Can we just all survive, like, with a cocktail? That’s what I want. A cocktail on the beach. That’s what I’ll pitch next.

Ironically, a good part of Grey’s Anatomy season 17 did take place on a beach, albeit in Meredith’s mind as she battled COVID-19. She was visited by several of the show’s deceased characters there, including Derek, Lexie, George, and Mark, so the scenes, while a treat for long-time viewers, weren’t as light in nature as what Luddington has in mind for Grey’s Anatomy‘s ending. A celebration of some kind, whether on a beach or elsewhere, does seem like a solid way to end the series, especially since all of the characters have experienced so much hardship, as Luddington notes.
As of now, it’s unclear when Grey’s Anatomy will end. When the series was renewed, there was no mention of it being the final season. In fact, Chandra Wilson, who’s played Miranda Bailey since season 1, was quick to dismiss rumors that Grey’s Anatomy season 19 will be the show’s last when she was asked about it recently. When the series does eventually come to an end, it’s likely viewers will have some advance notice. As the longest-running medical drama of all time, ABC will want to give Grey’s Anatomy‘s writers plenty of time to craft a satisfying goodbye, likely over the course of the entire final season.
