‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Issues Warning Ahead of Season Premiere: ‘It’s Rough’

Grey’s Anatomy star Camilla Luddington has a warning for fans who are planning on tuning into the ABC medical drama’s Season 22 premiere, airing on October 9.

While speaking to People magazine, Luddington, who plays Dr. Jo Wilson, referenced that viewers last saw Grey Sloan Memorial in catastrophe, after an explosion went off in an operating room. Unfortunately for Jo, her new husband, Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack), was in said OR, meaning his fate is currently unknown.

Luddington teased that the Season 22 premiere, which she described as “intense” and “explosive,” “feels like two hours worth of story.” She also said she knows many fans will be emotional about the upcoming episode.

“It’s the Grey’s you know and love, but maybe also the Grey’s you love to hate a little bit. I think there’s going to be some throwing things at your TV screen, which is what Grey’s does best too,” said Luddington, who joined the show’s cast during its 9th season. “I think that some things that fans will be happy about and some things they’re going to be crying about.”

She also suggested that fans’ questions won’t be answered by the end of Season 22, Episode 1.

“You will have to wait until the end… sometimes even a little bit into the next episode,” stated the actress while speaking to People.

She also said that filming the episode wasn’t all that fun, likely due to its intense storyline.

“It’s rough. It was not an easy episode to shoot. It was not fun to shoot. It’s a ride,” said Luddington.

Chris Carmack Discussed the Fate of His ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Character

The explosion in the Season 21 finale was caused by a hostage situation. In Season 21, Episode 16, Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) was tasked to perform a risky neurosurgery on a nine-year-old child named Dylan. While the surgery seemed successful, Dylan began to rapidly deteriorate, unable to move or talk. In Season 21, Episode 18, her mother, Jenna (Piper Perabo), took over Amelia’s OR by threatening her and her team with a tank “full of acetylene,” which could take down the building.

“You’re gonna operate on Dylan, and you’re gonna fix her. And if you don’t, if you don’t save her, I’m taking everyone down with me,” said Jenna to Amelia.

Once Amelia fixed Dylan, Jenna is arrested after saying the tank wasn’t full. Unfortunately, that didn’t end up being the case, and an explosion ensued after Amelia and her team cleared out for Link’s time to perform surgery.

In an October 2025 interview with Extra TV, Carmack briefly spoke about the fate of his Grey’s Anatomy character, who is expecting twins with Jo.

“Season 21 really left off with a bang. We are eagerly awaiting the status of the doctors who were still in the building and the patients and the nurses and everybody who was still in the building. So I can say we’re going to find out what happened,” said Carmack to Extra TV.
