According to a source close to the actor, Dane has been confronting his diagnosis with honesty and courage. “Nobody wants to think about or address their own mortality, but that is exactly what Eric is going through now,” the insider told the Daily Mail.

“He knows his fate and is trying to figure out how he wants to enjoy life, how to be a beacon of hope, and help others who are struggling. He also wants to spend this time surrounded by family and friends.”

ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare motor neuron disorder that progressively weakens muscles, affecting roughly 5,000 Americans each year.

From Hollywood Fame to a Heartbreaking Diagnosis

Dane first noticed weakness in his right hand in early 2024, believing it was fatigue from “texting too much.” Months later, after extensive tests, he was diagnosed with ALS in April.

By June, he had lost movement in his right arm. Though doctors estimate an average ALS life expectancy of three to five years, Dane’s symptoms have reportedly progressed faster than expected.

Still, those close to him say his spirit remains unbroken. “So many people take things for granted,” the source shared. “Eric wants to live fully, love deeply, and help others do the same.”

Family has also shaped Dane’s journey. His ex-wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, has reportedly been by his side as a source of unwavering support. The couple, who married in 2004, share two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13.

In an interview earlier this year, Dane recalled a terrifying snorkeling trip when his body suddenly failed him. “When I jumped in the ocean that day and realized I couldn’t swim back to the boat, I thought, ‘Oh, God,’” he told Diane Sawyer. “Then Georgia saw me and pulled me in. I was heartbroken.”
