‘Couldn’t’: Kate’s Home & Away confession
Kate Ritchie surprised listeners this morning on breakfast radio when she revealed that she doesn’t really watch episodes of Home And Away.
The beloved actress and radio personality made the wild confession on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie on Friday, while relating to the predicament of NBA legend Michael Jordan.
Her co-hosts Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli said they couldn’t understand why former Chicago Bulls star hasn’t picked up a basketball in 30 years or why he doesn’t have a hoop in his house.
But for 47-year-old Ritchie, it was all relatable content because she too can’t bring herself to watch the show that made her a star, forcing her co-hosts to label her the “Michael Jordan of TV”.

When they asked if she has at least sat down with her daughter Mae to watch episodes of the show and get the 11-year-old acquainted with the Summer Bay caravan park, Ritchie said they have not.
“[Mae] did watch my Gold Logies acceptance speech [from 2007] this year … but I haven’t watched Home and Away since,” said the actress, who left the show one year after her Gold Logie win.
“I think I sat down maybe about five years ago and watched one episode … but I couldn’t bear seeing other people living in my house and sitting on my couch for a while,” she laughed.
Ritchie played the much-loved Sally Fletcher on the show for 20 years from the show’s inception in 1987 to her departure in 2008. She was just eight years old when she made her debut on the show and went on to become one of the most recognised faces on Aussie TV.
Naturally, there have been persistent rumours that she’ll make a return to Summer Bay, but for Ritchie there’s no truth to the speculation.
“Can I ask … have you been asked to go back to Summer Bay?” Fitzy quizzed her on air.
Ritchie admitted that she has been approached by the show “numerous times” to “gauge interest”, but her answer remains the same.
“The show is doing so well. It doesn’t need Sally anymore. It’s moved on,” she said. “Sally has a nice life somewhere, I think about her.”
“But do you know what? I love Home and Away, but that’s a chapter of my life that’s done.”
However, she did say that if Mr Stewart, played by Ray Meagher, “asked her back”, she “would go”.
When she left the show in 2008, Ritchie said it was “the time is right” to say goodbye to Sally Fletcher – a role that earned her two Gold Logies.
“I was eight years old when I got the part of Sally and I’m now a 29-year-old woman who really needs to go out there and do something different,” she said in a statement at the time. “I need to sit down and think about my options.”
She ruled out heading to the US and UK like previous H&A actors before her because she wanted to stay close to home.
“I have been working for 20 years and to go to the US would be starting all over again, and rather than starting again I want to build on what I already have and I’d like to think that that’s here at home in Australia with everybody that has supported me and who I love,” she said.
