Camilla Luddington is teasing what’s ahead on Grey’s Anatomy following the catastrophic explosion at Grey Sloan Memorial that left questions about which doctors survived.
At 2025 Inspiration Awards Benefiting Step Up last month, the actress — who stars as Jo Wilson on the ABC medical drama — told PEOPLE that “every scene packs a punch” in the season 22 premiere, which airs Thursday, Oct. 9.
“There’s so much story that’s told in that, that I don’t know how we’re not a two-hour premiere, honestly,” she shared. “It feels like two hours worth of story. It’s intense. Explosive will be a great way to describe it.”
The actress revealed the episode will bring a mix of emotions for fans.
“It’s the Grey’s you know and love, but maybe also the Grey’s you love to hate a little bit,” she teased. “I think there’s going to be some throwing things at your TV screen, which is what Grey’s does best too.”
“I think that some things that fans will be happy about and some things they’re going to be crying about,” she added.
As for when fans will learn the fate of some of their favorite doctors, Luddington said, “You will have to wait until the end… sometimes even a little bit into the next episode.”
“It’s rough,” she continued. “It was not an easy episode to shoot. It was not fun to shoot. It’s a ride.”
As fans may recall, Grey’s Anatomy season 21 concluded with a desperate mother threatening to blow up the hospital over frustration about her daughter Dylan’s brain surgery.
In the episode, Jenna Gatlin (Piper Perabo) found Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd) and created a hostage situation, telling them that she had a tank of acetylene gas.
“You’re gonna operate on Dylan, and you’re gonna fix her,” she demanded. “And if you don’t, if you don’t save her, I’m taking everyone down with me.”
The OR team stepped in and managed to save Dylan, who later claimed the tank was actually empty. However, a forgotten valve resulted in a deadly exploitation on the surgical floor.
The episode came to an end with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) watching the flames engulf the building — a chilling parallel to the scene in season 13, during which showed her watch the hospital burn from the parking lot as well.
In the trailer for the upcoming season, fans see Meredith attempt to get back inside, but her efforts are stopped by a police officer. She doesn’t take no for an answer and breaks a window to unlock the door.
“Clinic’s open,” she declares.
Jo later panics when she realizes that she hasn’t heard back from Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack), saying, “Linc’s not answering his phone. Where is he?”
