‘Y: Marshals’ Promo Teases ‘Skeletons’ in Kayce Dutton’s Closet in ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff (VIDEO)

Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is trying to keep his skeletons in the closet in the latest Y: Marshals teaser. The teaser was posted on CBS‘s Instagram and gives a new, albeit very brief, look at Grimes and his costars in the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff, premiering in 2026.

“I’m just grappling with some skeletons I’d like to keep in my closet,” Kayce says in the short clip. The footage shows an armed Grimes walking through Montana woods with his fellow marshals, played by Arielle Kebbel and Ash Santos.

In a previous teaser from October 20, Kayce says, “I’m changing paths. I’m trying to find a new beginning.” He was still wearing his wedding ring in that video, implying that he and Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) are still together despite Asbille’s absence from the Y: Marshals cast list. Brecken Merrill is reprising his role as Tate Dutton, Kayce and Monica’s son, in the new series.

In addition to Grimes, Y: Marshals is bringing three Yellowstone stars into the fold for the CBS spinoff. There’s Merrill as Tate, and Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty will be back as Thomas Rainwater and Mo, respectively.

Y: Marshals will see Grimes reprise his role as Kayce Dutton in the series that will be a procedural following his life as a U.S. Marshal in Montana. This is a new job for Kayce, one that harkens back to his military roots and Livestock Association commissioner role as seen in Yellowstone. Additional stars are Logan Marshall-Green, and Tatanka Means.

A Beth and Rip Yellowstone spinoff is also in the works with Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Finn Little set to reprise their roles as Beth Dutton, Rip Wheeler, and Carter, with Annette Bening as a new character named Beulah Jackson. Get all the details here.

Here’s everything there is to know about Y: Marshals so far.

What is the Kayce Dutton Yellowstone spinoff about?

Y: Marshals stars Grimes as Kayce Dutton. With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.

Who is in the Y: Marshals cast?

In addition to Grimes, Merrill, Birmingham, Brings Plenty, and Marshall-Green, series regulars are Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Ash Santos as Andrea, and Tatanka Means as Miles. The trio is playing Marshals, Variety reports. Brett Cullen will appear in the recurring role of Harry Gifford, head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana.

Marshall-Green plays Pete Calvin, a friend from Kayce’s time in the military.

Is Kelsey Asbille returning as Monica Dutton in Y: Marshals?

With Grimes reprising his role, and with the show set in Montana like the original series, it’d be safe to assume that Kayce’s family would be part of the story. Grimes previously told People that there will be some “familiar faces” in the cast, as well as new ones. But Asbille’s absence from the August 26 casting announcement raises questions about Monica’s presence in the spinoff. Of course, it’s still possible she could appear, but fans will have to wait and see if her casting is announced.

Yellowstone ended with Kayce selling the Dutton ranch to Tom Rainwater, giving the land back to the indigenous people of the Broken Rock Reservation community of which Monica and Tate are descendants. Kayce and Monica were still married by Yellowstone‘s end.

Why is Kayce Dutton getting a spinoff?

Grimes himself was surprised by the development. The idea for Y: Marshals was pitched to Grimes about four months after Yellowstone‘s final season wrapped filming, he recently told People, and he was confused at first about how there was more story to tell about his character when his and his family’s storyline was left in such a place of completeness and peace at the end of Yellowstone.

“We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable,” Grimes shared, saying that “if it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool. But I’ll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting, and it really roped me in, and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”

Grimes added that “nobody wanted [Yellowstone] to be over” and that saying goodbye to Kayce was like saying goodbye to family. “I don’t think the fans wanted it to be over. A lot of us actors kind of didn’t want it to be over, and the studio and network certainly didn’t want it to be over,” he said. It seems that’s the prevailing reason why Y: Marshals and the Beth and Rip spinoff are happening.
