Shonda Rhimes reveals how ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ was born: “They were terrified”
The creator of the medical drama tells the origins of the television phenomenon
The series ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ is one of the longest running on television. Since its pilot episode in 2005, the medical drama has garnered great audience numbers not only in the US, but also around the world. The audience’s loyalty to the product has been faultless, despite the fact that wear and tear is a reality, as well as the departure of several of the protagonists.

Beyond that, screenwriter Shonda Rhimes, who is also responsible for other hits such as ‘Scandal’, spoke on the podcast ‘Call Her Daddy’ about the medical drama’s trajectory and how the series came about. This was Rhimes’ first major project. And it all started when she gave birth: “When you have a baby, you don’t go out anymore, and I started watching television.”
The creator saw other series during that period, such as ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, and got the itch to do television. “They were terrified,” Rhimes confessed when she told her agents about her desire to break into television. Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO and someone with a lot of power at ABC at the time, wanted a medical drama
And everything went smoothly. Shonda Rhimes, who was always a fan of this type of series and stories, was able to carry out the project. Although she also expressed that just when she was about to leave Hollywood and consider the idea of studying medicine, she chose to write and develop what would be a phenomenon years later.
“Grey’s Anatomy” is currently airing its 22nd season. The star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey in the drama, will appear in a limited form in this new installment, as she will only be seen in seven episodes. Only Richard Webber, played by James Pickens Jr, and Miranda Bailey, played by Chandra Wilson, are the only ones who have been around since day one. In addition, Shonda Rhimes has already expressed that there is still a long way to go.
