A Western period drama described as “gritty” is making its way to Netflix – and it’s perfect for Yellowstone fans. Boasting a star-studded cast featuring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, the upcoming show is “worth the wait” on the streamer.

The Abandons was created by Sons of Anarchy alum Kurt Sutter and has been compared to Kevin Costner’s popular series Yellowstone, so fans looking to fill that gap in their viewing schedule are in luck.

Set for release this December, the cast includes the likes of Game of Thrones icon Headey alongside Sex Education and The Crown‘s Anderson as two mothers locked in a bloody feud.

The show’s synopsis teases: “The Abandons tells the story of a group of diverse renegade families living on the fringes of society in 1850s Washington State. These lost souls band together to fight corrupt forces and do anything they can to save their land.

“The Western series will explore the jagged line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets as this makeshift family battles to keep what’s theirs.”

Headey appears as Fiona Nolan, described as “the strong-willed matriarch who adopts four orphans” and will “stop at nothing to protect her family.”

Anderson, meanwhile, stars as Constance Van Ness, with a character description teasing: “Squaring up against Fiona is Constance, a very different strong-willed matriarch who will stop at nothing to protect and grow the mining fortune she inherited from her husband and then doubled — she aims to consolidate the Van Ness clan’s power in the ruthless, unforgiving frontier.”

The cast is rounded out by Maid‘s Nick Robinson, Booksmart‘s Diana Silvers, X-Men‘s Lucas Till, The Last Of Us‘ Lamar Johnson, The Nightingale‘s Aisling Franciosi, and Hail Mary‘s Natalia del Riego.

Speaking to Tudum, executive producer Chris Keyser teased what fans can expect from the eagerly anticipated new series.

“This first chapter of The Abandons is a classic American story — the frontier, two families — both at war and in love with each other, a battle over who owns the land and who makes the rules.

“Smack in the middle of murder and revenge and a bit of illicit romance, we get to explore questions we never seem to get away from: What makes a family? How do you stay good in a bad world? And would you change who you are and what you believe in to protect what you love?

“But, in this case, we do it all through the eyes of Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, as two widowed matriarchs battling to survive. And that, as they say, is really something to watch.”
