Anthony Hill Teases Maggie’s Return to Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 (Excl)
Grey’s Anatomy will feature a special cameo from Kelly McCreary’s Maggie Pierce on season 22, but what does the return mean for her onscreen ex-husband?
“I don’t know if I can say [much], but I will tease the fact that there are developments in their lives,” Anthony Hill, who stars on Grey’s as Winston Ndugu, exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month. “I [can’t reveal] if they’ll come in contact with each other or not, but I know that there will be some eyebrows raised.”

Hill, 37, joined the long-running medical drama during season 16 as Maggie’s love interest. The two doctors tied the knot, but they eventually divorced in season 20 after Maggie relocated from Seattle to Chicago. (McCreary, 44, left the show at the time but has since made occasional cameos.)
A teaser for the Thursday, October 16, episode, revealed Maggie will return to Seattle to support sister-in-law Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) through the death of colleague Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales) after fallout from the explosion in the season premiere.
While few details are known about Maggie’s latest arc, Hill gave Us a glimpse of what it was like having McCreary back on set.
“She’s the best,” he told Us. “There’s like this thing that happens when she comes back to the show, it’s like her and I … just have this way, like, [how] old friends can just reconnect and they never miss a beat. I feel like that’s kind of how it is working with her.”
Hill continued, “We just jump right into it and it makes sense and it’s comfortable and it’s fun, and there’s no warm-up that’s needed. She’s the best, and she makes people around her better.”
Hill’s character, meanwhile, has come a long way himself. He arrived to Grey Sloan Memorial as a suitor for Maggie and ended up the chief of cardiothoracic surgery.

“Starting as a love interest is a very interesting place to start, and then kind of just evolving from there in a way that’s been a lot, but those moments … are starting to form this three-dimensional man who happens to be a doctor,” Hill told Us of Winston’s story line throughout the show. “It’s not just [as] a doctor and a love interest, now we’re starting to understand why he does some of the things that he does or why he lacks certain traits that we wish he had, or whatever it is. It’s been fun to kind of evolve and grow and try to figure the guy out.”
According to Hill, Winston’s next chapter in season 22 has been “really enjoyable” to explore as an actor.
“There’s a lot of moving parts to these stories, and I get it. He started to stand on his own, and we haven’t been able to see Winston fly on his own in a way that has a true individual flair to it,” he explained. “So, this is kind of nice to get into this ground of [just] Winston instead of Winston and Maggie, which is a beautiful thing also, but it’s a different chapter. I think we’re starting to show that new chapter in a fun way.”
