Meet the Kids of the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Cast (Including One Who Made a Surprise Cameo!)
The cast of Grey’s Anatomy has welcomed quite a few children over the years.
Though the long-running medical series, which first premiered in 2005, is better known for its operating-room twists than family milestones, parenthood has become a big part of life for many of its stars.
Ellen Pompeo — who has played the titular Dr. Meredith Grey for two decades — is a mother of three children whom she shares with her husband Chris Ivery.
Like her costar, Chandra Wilson, who has been Dr. Miranda Bailey since the show’s inception, has three children as well.
Though the show is finding a new audience with a younger generation, Pompeo shared during a March 2025 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live that she’s not ready for her younger children to see it yet.
“My 15-year-old has seen it, and now my 10-year-old wants to see it,” she said. “She’s not ready, but a lot of kids in her class have seen it.”
“No judgment on other parents. But I don’t want my daughter to see me in my underwear on television just yet,” she continued, before adding, “But all her classmates have so … That makes for great conversation at pick-up.”
From the original cast to the more recent additions, here’s a look at all the Grey’s Anatomy stars who’ve become parents in real life.
Ellen Pompeo’s 3 Children

After marrying Chris Ivery in 2007, the longest-running Grey’s Anatomy star went on to have three children.
She welcomed her first daughter, Stella Luna, in 2009, followed by Sienna May via surrogate in 2014. Pompeo gave birth to the couple’s son, Eli Christopher, in 2016. The actress cited spending more time with her children as one of the reasons she reduced her iconic role on the ABC drama after 19 seasons.
“I have a lot that I’m doing,” Pompeo told Drew Barrymore during a December 2022 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. “I have three kids and so I take care of them, and it’s really important for me to be around for them and be more present for them.”
Chandra Wilson’s 3 Children
During the 20 years she has played Dr. Miranda Bailey, Wilson has also raised a family with her long-time partner, whose name she’s never made public. She welcomed her first child, Sarina McFarlane, in 1993 and had her second daughter, Joylin McFarlane-Fairman, in 1998.
Her youngest and only son, Michael McFarlane, was born in 2005, after her pregnancy was written into the second season of Grey’s Anatomy.
The Emmy-nominated actress revealed in 2021 that she started watching her medical drama with her daughter, though not back-to-back.
“I’m slow … I can’t do that,” Wilson said on Live with Kelly and Ryan. “One a day is my thing.”
James Pickens Jr.’s 2 Children

After the couple married in 1984, Taylor gave birth to Gavyn Pickens and Carl Tharps.
Gavyn followed in her father’s footsteps and has appeared in a few series, including a 2018 episode of Grey’s Anatomy. She’s also acted in Orange Is the New Black and Wayward Guide.

Justin Chambers’ 5 Children
Justin Chambers — who portrayed Dr. Alex Karev for 16 seasons — has been married to Keisha Chambers since 1993. The couple share five children: Isabella, Maya, Kaila, Eva and Jackson.
After the birth of their first daughter, Isabella, in 1994, the couple welcomed twin girls Maya and Kaila three years later. Chambers’ youngest daughter, Eva, arrived in 1999, followed by her brother, Jackson, in 2002.
At the 25th Annual Women’s Image Awards in February 2024, the actor joked that he often feels out of depth in a family full of women.
“They’re a little better read than I am,” Chambers told PEOPLE. “They’re little college graduates. And they’re more academic. And sometimes I’m like, ‘Wow.’ I’m really impressed with how intelligent and interested they are in things. But most importantly, I’m just happy that they’re kind.”
Patrick Dempsey’s 3 Children
While playing his iconic role of Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd, Patrick Dempsey was also focusing on being a father of three kids: Talula Fyfe Dempsey, Darby Galen Dempsey and Sullivan Patrick Dempsey.
The Enchanted star and his wife of almost 30 years, Jillian Fink, became parents for the first time with the birth of Talula in 2002. Five years later, they welcomed twin boys, Darby and Sullivan.
Now that his kids are adults, Dempsey told PEOPLE in 2023 that it’s “harder” to take care of them.
“Because you need to be around, but they don’t want you around because they’re fighting for their independence, which they should,” he said. “They need to find out how they interact in the world, they need to learn those boundaries, they need to make mistakes. And you need to be there for them and allow them to learn from that.”
Kevin McKidd’s 4 Children
Kevin McKidd, who has starred as Dr. Owen Hunt on Grey’s Anatomy since season 5, is a father of four.
During his 17-year marriage to Jane Parker, which ended in 2017, he welcomed two children: Joseph in 2000 and Iona in 2002. Following their split, he married Arielle Goldrath, and they also had two children — son Aiden in 2018 and daughter Nava James in 2019 — before divorcing in 2023.
In an October 2022 interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the actor opened up about what it was like to raise young kids for the second time.
“The first time, I was more worried about paying the gas bill, making ends meet,” McKidd said. “I think you realize when you’re older that those young years when they’re really wee, they go so fast.”
Camilla Luddington’s 2 Children

Camilla Luddington poses with her two kids, daughter Hayden and son Lucas in July 2018.
When she’s not saving lives as Dr. Jo Wilson, Camilla Luddington is busy raising the daughter and son she shares with her husband, Matthew Alan.
The actress gave birth to their first child, Hayden Alan, in 2017, and got engaged the same year. After tying the knot in 2019, they welcomed their son, Lucas Matthew Alan, a year later in August 2020.
In a 2023 interview with NewBeauty, Luddington said she was “still learning” what balance between family life and filming Grey’s Anatomy looked like.
“It’s tricky,” she said. “You learn as you go, and it’s different every year and every age because they change so much and they need different things.”
Caterina Scorsone’s 3 Children
Though her Grey’s Anatomy character, Dr. Amelia Shepherd, is hesitant to motherhood, Caterina Scorsone dove right in and welcomed three daughters with her ex-husband, Rob Giles.
The former couple’s first child, Eliza Giles, arrived in 2012, followed four years later by Paloma “Pippa” Michaela Giles, who was born with Down syndrome.
Scorsone told PEOPLE in October 2020 that Pippa’s “difference lit a match in my life and in the life of my family.”
The actress gave birth to another daughter, Lucinda “Lucky” Giles, in 2019 before splitting with Giles the following year.
To keep the peace with her three kids, Scorsone told Parents magazine in December 2022 that she makes “sure to check in with each individually,” otherwise, “there’s a lot of fighting and crying!”
Kim Raver’s 2 Children
Kim Raver, who has played Dr. Teddy Altman on the show since season 6, shares two boys with her long-time husband, filmmaker Manu Boyer.
She gave birth to their first child, Luke West Boyer, in 2002 and their second, Leo Kipling Boyer, in 2007.
In a 2022 Instagram post celebrating Mother’s Day, Raver wrote that her two sons make her “a better human everyday.”
Jason George’s 3 Children
Long-time Grey’s Anatomy cast member Jason George — a.k.a. Dr. Ben Warren — is a proud father of three kids whom he shares with his wife, poet Vandana Khanna.
Though the actor has kept his family life out of the spotlight, he shared a sweet throwback Halloween photo with his kids for Father’s Day in 2021.
“blessed to watch you grow & develop your #superpowers,” he captioned the photo of the family dressed as superheroes.
Chris Carmack’s 2 Children
Chris Carmack is the father of two girls. The Grey’s Anatomy star, who’s played Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln since season 15, welcomed his first child, Kai Carmack, in 2016, with his wife Erin Slaver. After the couple tied the knot in 2018, Slaver gave birth to their second daughter, Cielle Estee Carmack, in 2022.
In a June 2025 interview with Woman’s World, the actor called being a dad “the most important and encompassing role” he’s ever played.
“They take up all my free time, and I’m grateful for it,” Carmack said. “It’s frantic and stressful, but they reward you with love.”
Harry Shum Jr.’s Daughter
Grey’s Anatomy’s Harry Shum Jr. — or Dr. Benson Kwan, as fans know him — shares one child with his wife, Shelby Rabara. After the couple wed in 2015, they welcomed their daughter, Xia, in 2019.
Though the actor has kept his child out of the spotlight, he occasionally shares snippets of his family life on Instagram. In one 2021 post, Shum shared a photo of Xia on his back as they explored a state park in Northern California.
