‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 22 premiere: Does Chris Carmack’s Dr. Link die?

Spoiler alert: The following contains details from the Season 22 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Longtime “Grey’s Anatomy” fans know that no one is ever safe at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

ABC’s medical drama returned for Season 22 Thursday night, Oct. 9, with a chaotic episode showcasing the aftermath of last season’s hospital explosion.

Grey's Anatomy' Season 22 premiere: Does Chris Carmack's Dr. Link die?

The blast, caused by a cauterization tool igniting gas in an operating room, injured multiple characters on the show, including Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack). Known as the goofball Link on the show, the orthopedic surgeon was the most severely injured character and shared an emotional farewell phone call with his new wife, Dr. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington).

While one fatality was confirmed at the start of the premiere, viewers bore witness to a far more shocking death by the episode’s end. Here’s what happened on the Season 22 premiere.

Does Link die on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?

No, Dr. Atticus Lincoln managed to survive injuries sustained from the hospital blast thanks to a miraculous recovery and treatment from fellow doctors Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill), Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) and Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

The majority of the episode left fans worried for the orthopedic surgeon, who was introduced back in Season 15. However, he is expected to recover from his injuries, bringing relief to both Jo and ex-girlfriend Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), who shares a child with him.

Who died on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?

Unfortunately, Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales) didn’t make it past the new season premiere.

What initially appeared to be just a shattered pelvis turned into a heartbreaking and unexpected death. The pediatric surgeon guided second-year resident Dr. Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane) through a difficult solo procedure on a child.

However, Beltran was trapped under operating light equipment that prevented her from performing the surgery and from being medically examined herself. By the time the fire crew entered the room, Milin completed the surgery, but Beltran had passed away.

Morales joined “Grey’s Anatomy” as a guest star in Season 20 before returning as a recurring actor in Season 21.

Did Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital blow up?

An explosion at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital left multiple people injured and caused severe damage to the structure, but the hospital remains intact and is set to rebuild.
