Coronation Street fans were left furious when George Shuttleworth was arrested on Tuesday night’s episode. The undertaker, who has been played by former Benidorm star Tony Maudsley since 2020, had become all wrapped up in the ordeal of his surrogate son Todd Grimshaw, who had become a victim of abuse at the hands of partner Theo Silverton.
As part of a controversial flashforward that all led to a Murder Week, in which the same day was repeated over and over again, Theo was one of five potential villains set to be killed off and, in the end, he did not make it out alive, having been found dead at the bottom of some scaffolding.
Now, viewers of the world’s longest-running TV soap face a lengthy whodunnit storyline and, with the suspects all lined up, one thing led to another on the latest instalment of the Manchester-based serial. In the end, kindly George was taken in for questioning by DS Lisa Swain, who fans will know has a history of blaming the wrong person, having previously locked Roy Cropper up for murder and more recently putting innocent Dev Alahan in a cell.

Theo’s death came following a harrowing confrontation with Todd in the flat, during which George had rushed to his aid, and he was arrested on the basis that he had come away with the scaffolder’s blood on his shirt. Soon enough, Swain stormed round and George was led away in a police car. Once in the interview room, she began: “Mr Silverton’s blood is on your shirt. He must have been bleeding.”

George tried to explain that he did hit Theo, but the fight ended when he and Todd locked him in the bathroom and fled the scene so they could call the police. Swain continued: “You trapped him in the bathroom at his flat. Then after drinking three pints, you learned that Mr Silverton had escaped and was out there chasing Mr Grimshaw. Christina had gone to collect him on her own, and you… ..you just stayed at home?”
George admitted that at that point, he had gone for a walk and, seemingly having made up her own mind, Swain said: “So there is no one who can confirm your account?” Back at number eleven, Christina was starting to despair as she worried why he was being kept in so long, and why, it had transpired that he had lied about going for a walk in the first place, having told his partner that he had stayed at home.
With the cogs beginning to turn, Christina told Todd: ” Todd, there’s only one person who knows who killed Theo, right? And that’s his murderer.” But Christina, who is played by Amy Robbins, is also set to become a suspect, as news from bosses recently revealed.

The other named suspects include Todd’s daughter Summer Spellman, Todd himself, Theo’s former colleague Gary Windass and Theo’s ex-wife Danielle Silverton. The first three to be interrogated are are Theo’s partner Todd, George and Gary.
Fans were quick to react to George’s shock arrest, with one writing on X: “I’ve never been more certain of someone’s innocence!!!!” A second wrote: “Poor George is a nervous wreck being interviewed by DS Swain,” whilst a third said: “Why is DS Swain so unpleasant ? Would she really be interviewing George!”

Another raged: “Another ridiculous storyline where we all know, except for the Keystone cops of #Corrie know that George did nothing!”
