Jo’s fate was left hanging at the end of Season 22 mid-season finale after a routine checkup following shortness of breath led to a shocking diagnosis. Her heart was failing, and her twin babies were in danger, with an emergency C-section being the only way forward.

Putting exit rumors to rest, the January 8 Season 22 winter premiere, “Skyfall,” plunged viewers back into the heart of the storm. Winston sprang into action, simultaneously performing Jo’s heart surgery and a C-section to deliver her premature twin girls. The newborns were taken to the NICU, while Jo had a graft put into her heart.

While the surgery was successful, the new parents’ fight was far from over. With hours ticking by, and Jo still out cold, it remained unclear if the graft had actually worked. And to make things more intense, one of the babies was facing her own heart battle.
